Colonial Reading Partners

Why do kids drop out of school? Many times it is because they didn’t learn to read by the third grade. Help change a life by giving one hour a week to help a child learn to read. There are schools near South KC, Overland Park, or downtown, and most readers help out over their lunchtime.

God’s Community Garden

Location: Overland Park Campus MAP

Serve Hours: Flexible

Description: As part of God’s Community Garden, the Harvest for Hunger Garden is a volunteer-based part of God’s Garden, growing to feed the hungry in our community. Thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables are distributed to folks through Colonial and Mission Southside Pantries as well as other food pantries. Harvesters Mobile Food Distribution

Healing House

Gracious Promise

House of Hope KC

Location: 7044 Antioch Rd, Overland Park, KS 66204 MAP

Serve Hours: Flexible hours

Description: Teach special skills (music, art, sewing, etc), provide office help, lead Bible studies, provide home maintenance. House of Hope provides residential treatment program for hurting teenage girls, with the goal of family restoration. Lead to Read

Location: At Kansas City elementary schools near downtown

Description: Adult readers practice reading skills with eager elementary students in 30 minute sessions once per week.

The Single Mom KC

Location: 11539 W 83rd Terrace, Lenexa, KS 66214

Serve Hours: Weekly/Monthly, typically 2-4 hour shifts

Description: The Single Mom KC builds communities of hope that empower single mothers to lead solid, stable, thriving families. It does this through meetings and workshops that equip moms in spiritual and emotional growth and by providing resources so families can walk in restoration. The Single Mom KC runs the Clothed With Dignity Boutique, where single moms shop for free. Volunteers are needed to sort clothes, act as personal shoppers and help with childcare throughout the week. Monthly volunteers are needed to assist with child care or facilitate mom groups at TSMKC’s monthly Pursuit dinner held at Colonial’s OP Campus.
