  • Why do kids drop out of school? Many times it is because they didn’t learn to read by the third grade. Help change a life by giving one hour a week to help a child learn to read. There are schools near Wornall, Quivira, or downtown, and most readers help out over their lunchtime.

    Serve Hours: Flexible

    Description: Garden plots are available for lease to anyone in the community. Twenty-four beds are reserved for the Harvest for Hunger Garden (which supplies veggies to local food pantries) and volunteers are needed to tend those plots. Volunteers can also earn fresh vegetables for every hour they serve!

    Serve Hours: During the school year: After school tutoring from 4-5 pm every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Wornall Wednesdays from 5:30-7:30 pm on Wednesdays. Lead to Read from 11:30-noon on Thursdays.

    During the summer: Community Cookouts 6:30-8:30 on Thursday nights.

    Description: Be the Church Neighborhood Impact is a Spirit-led movement that encourages the local church to be Christlike neighbors. We are part of the IMPACT Ministries team at Colonial Presbyterian Church.

    Description: Teach special skills (music, art, sewing, etc), provide office help, lead Bible studies, provide home maintenance. House of Hope provides residential treatment program for hurting teenage girls, with the goal of family restoration.     Description: Harvesters Food Network organizes and funds a program called “BackSnacks” to provide low-income children with food for the weekend during the school year. Repackage food for backpacks and deliver to Boone Elementary and Center Elementary. There is a special need for volunteers who have a van or SUV to help with delivery.
